The short version
- Water and electricity are a dangerous mix
- Stay away from downed lines
- Do not use wet electrical fixtures
- Call a qualified electrician if unsure
Downed lines
Treat every downed line as live. Keep well away from it and from anything touching it, and call the utility and emergency services. Do not drive over it or try to move it.
Warn others to keep clear.
Water in the house
Water can run along wires and into fixtures, outlets and the panel. If water is near them, avoid touching them, and if you can reach the main breaker safely, consider switching off power to the area.
If standing water is involved, do not enter the area.
Wet fixtures
Do not use light fixtures or outlets that have been wet until a qualified electrician has checked them. Flickering, buzzing and burning smells are warning signs.
Leave and call for help if you smell smoke.
After the storm
Have the electrical system checked if water entered the structure. Roofers can stop the water at the roof, but they are not electricians.
Keep receipts and photos.
