The service

Emergency Board-Up of Roof Openings, explained.

A tarp alone will not hold where the decking itself is gone. If a limb has punched through, or fire and wind have removed boards, the opening has to be bridged first, with sheathing fastened to sound framing, and then covered with underlayment or a tarp.

We board up openings so that rain, animals and debris stay out, and so that the roof can be safely walked and later repaired. It is a short-term structure, built to be replaced by a permanent repair.

Signs you need this

  • A hole through the roof deck after a limb or fire
  • Rafters are visible from above or from the attic
  • A tarp alone cannot span the damaged area
  • Animals or weather can enter the roof
Is it right for your roof?

A good fit, and what to know.

We would rather you hear the limits from us than discover them later.

A good fit when

  • A hole or missing deck section is open to the weather
  • A tree or fire has damaged the roof structure
  • You need the opening secured quickly and safely

Worth knowing

  • Board-up is temporary and should be replaced by a proper repair
  • Badly damaged framing needs structural repair before a safe board-up is possible

How it runs

From first call to finished work.

A clear sequence for every job.

  1. 01

    Find the sound framing

We locate solid rafters around the opening so the board has something safe to fasten to.

  2. 02

    Cut and fasten sheathing

Boards are cut to cover the opening and screwed to the framing, with overlap onto good decking.

  3. 03

    Waterproof over the top

Underlayment or a tarp goes over the boards and is lapped so water runs off, not in.

  4. 04

    Photograph and report

We record the opening before and after and explain what the permanent repair will need.

Questions

Emergency Board-Up FAQ.

Is board-up the same as a tarp?

No. Board-up closes an open deck with wood. A tarp or membrane then covers it. Many openings need both.

Do you remove the damaged framing?

If the framing is unsafe we tell you. Structural repair is a separate step, and we explain what it involves.

Does board-up count as the repair?

No. It is a temporary closure that makes the roof safe and dry until the permanent repair.
