The short version
- Lightning can burn shingles and decking
- Fire may start in the attic
- Damage can be hidden
- Call emergency services if there is smoke or fire
What happens
A strike can punch a hole in shingles, char the decking and travel through framing and wiring. Sometimes the only visible sign is a small burn mark or a cracked ridge.
The heat can start a smoldering fire in the attic.
Safety first
If you smell smoke, see flames or hear crackling, leave and call emergency services. Do not go into the attic to check.
Let the fire department decide when it is safe.
After the all clear
Have the roof, attic and wiring checked. Roofing, decking and framing may be scorched or weakened, and electrical systems may be damaged.
Cover any burned openings.
Repair
Burned decking and framing need replacement, and a damaged roof needs proper repair. Document everything for your insurer.
Restoration of smoke and water damage is a separate specialty.
