The short version
- Spring is the peak for severe storms
- Straight-line winds, hail and tornadoes all occur
- Winter brings ice and the occasional snow
- Roofs need checks after each major event
Spring storms
Spring is the main severe weather season in Middle Tennessee, with thunderstorms that bring hail, strong straight-line winds and tornado threats. These storms can hit quickly and in narrow bands.
Watch alerts and have a plan.
Summer and fall
Heat and humidity age roofs, and thunderstorms can still produce damaging wind and hail. Tropical remnants occasionally bring heavy rain and wind.
Trees stressed by drought or heat can drop limbs.
Winter
Freeze-thaw cycles, ice and occasional heavy snow stress roofs and gutters. Ice dams form when heat escapes through the attic.
Check attic insulation and ventilation.
Your routine
Inspect the roof each spring and fall, after significant storms and before selling or buying. Keep trees trimmed and gutters clear, and keep photographs of your roof’s condition.
A baseline record helps later.
