The short version
- Estimates can miss hidden damage
- A supplement is a request for additional coverage
- Evidence is what supports it
- Raise it before work continues
Why damage gets missed
Adjusters see the roof from the surface and in limited time. Damaged decking, rotted fascia, flashing problems and code requirements often appear only after roofing is removed.
This is normal and not a sign of bad faith.
What a supplement is
A supplement is a request to the insurer to add items to the original estimate based on new information. It usually includes photos, measurements and a description of what was found.
It is common in larger repairs.
Building the evidence
Photograph the new findings before they are covered up, and document the reason the work is needed. A roofer can provide a written description. Ask your insurer how it wants supplements submitted.
Timing matters.
Limits
Whether a supplement is accepted depends on your policy and the evidence. No contractor can promise the outcome.
Stay in touch with your insurer through the process.
